Mar 29, 2015 Ethernet is a specification for the physical layer of network technology. An ethernet port, like in your laptop, has way more hardware in it than a serial port, including magnetics; as far as I know, you can't use them as serial ports (and I looked for ways to do this for a project). For serial on a laptop, you should get a USB adapter. Short answer: No. Longer answer: It's an RS-232 serial interface, not an Ethernet interface. Side note: I've just checked a Cisco serial cable and confirmed that it's an 8P8C connector; but RJ45 is a different beast entirely. Console cables are rollover cables. Re: How to use an Ethernet port as a com port. The short answer from my limited knowledge is no - protocols, voltages levels and termination impedances are all much too different to be able to get Ethernet into a serial com or USB format. The USB serial port, or serial port 0 is referred to as Serial in sketches. To use serial port 1, the name changes to Serial1. Serial ports 2 and 3 are referred to as Serial2 and Serial3. This sketch shows serial port 3 being used which transmits on pin 14 of the MEGA or Due and receives on pin 15.
The number of virtual ports you can create is only limited by your system’s capabilities. Communication data is transmitted between your network and serial device by using a serial over LAN connection. Users can redirect serial ports to virtual PC, Hyper-V, VMWare, etc. With this RS232 to LAN software converter. As you can see from above images a serial Ethernet converter can have one serial port or it can have multiple serial ports, up to 25 ports or more. The standard panel mount serial Ethernet converter is most common but it is also available with DIN mounts so it can easily be installed on a standard DIN rail.

Ok, my boss gave me a problem to solve in 12 hours.
Have a touchscreen monitor.
Video connection is ok. But Touch input connection is not.
The touch port on the monitor is r323. The only computer we currently have is a laptop with no serial ports.
Tools in my hand, r323 to ethernet adapter cable.
r323 to r323 cable.
r323 to 1x10 pin adapter..
Windows 8 installation media tool. Obviously, with the tools in my hand I can't use serial ports. don't want to open up the laptop..
So my options are limited to use the ethernet connection right now. Need a program / driver to make my system recognize the ethernet port as a serial port. Or something to make it work..
Not vital, but if I can solve this in 12 hours, it will make us gain 5 - 10 days in a project. If I can't, I will go buy a usb to r323 converter cable, and it will most probably fix the problem - but by tomorrow morning, it will be late, and we will probably lose those 5-10 days..
